Hikmat Devon CIC

Hikmat Devon, is a user-led co-operative that works with members of the black and minority ethnic (bme) communities across Devon. We work to promote integration and reduce isolation, whilst improving health and well-being outcomes. This is done through activity and interest groups, 1 to 1 mentoring, training, signposting, counselling, and person centred goal planning. We also support bme carers through our Hikmat Carers service.

Hikmat Devon CIC is a Co-operative, established in 2005.

The needs our organisation works to address include:
- Rural & urban isolation for members of bme community living in Devon
- Prevalent health issues linked to isolation, culture, language barriers, and lack of access to services
- Respond to the rise in number of bme people living in Devon: Census figures showed a dramatic increase of 8,000 in 2001 rising to 20,000 in 2011.
- Discrimination and victim support

This is done through a range of services that best suits each individual.

Services provide group and one-to-one interventions to:
*reduce the loneliness and social isolation which stem from language barriers and absence of support networks, and the resultant deteriorating physical, emotional and mental health, by engaging in meaningful activities with others from the same language group/cultural background.

*provide social opportunities, advice and signposting to BME persons aged 18+ in a safe and secure environment where their individual culturally specific needs are understood and met, this includes religion, gender, language and ethnic background.

*improve emotional, physical and psychological well-being and resilience and sustained independence.

*increase self reliance and social capital through networks and links with other community groups.

*Facilitate access to statutory and other services where this has been unsuccessful because of poor English or lack of confidence

New referrals receive a 1 to 1 assessment with a trained bilingual Mentor and a SMART plan is created to assist us in allocating users to the most appropriate service, best suited to that individual.
